Nasturtium seeds — easy, edible and cheerful

Nasturtiums are one of the easiest flowers of all — bold, spurred blooms in fiery reds, oranges and yellows, with edible, peppery leaves and flowers. The garden nasturtium is gathered under Tropaeolum majus within our flower seed range, and it's a star of our edible flowers. New to growing? Our flower growing guide covers the basics.

Sow once it's warm for months of colour — the calendar shows when.

Trailing, climbing and edible

Trailing and climbing types tumble from pots and up supports, while compact bush forms suit borders and our container range. The whole plant is edible — peppery leaves and flowers for salads, seed pods pickled like capers — and the blooms are great for pollinators. They're a classic companion plant, luring aphids away from beans and brassicas.

Growing nasturtiums from seed

Sow the large seeds direct after the last frost, in poor to average soil — rich ground gives lush leaves but few flowers. They need almost no care beyond the odd water, which makes them a brilliant first sow for children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are nasturtiums edible?
Yes — the peppery leaves and flowers, and the seed pods can be pickled like capers.

When do I sow them?
Direct after the last frost, in poor to average soil.

Why are mine all leaf and few flowers?
The soil is too rich — nasturtiums flower best grown lean.

Are they good companion plants?
Yes — they lure aphids away from beans and brassicas.

Are they good for children?
Ideal — large seed, fast and almost foolproof.
