Viola wittrockiana — the garden pansy

Viola wittrockiana is the botanical name for the large-flowered garden pansy, the cheerful, velvety-faced flower that carries colour through the cool seasons like nothing else. It is the species behind our viola range within the flower seed collection.

History & origin

The garden pansy is a hybrid, raised in the nineteenth century by crossing several wild European violas, including the wild pansy or heartsease. Within a few decades breeders had transformed modest wildflowers into the bold, large-faced pansies grown across the world today.

The name honours the Swedish botanist Veit Brecher Wittrock, who studied the genus; Viola is simply the ancient Latin name for these flowers.

Botanical characteristics

A compact, low-growing perennial usually grown as a biennial for autumn-to-spring colour, the pansy bears large, rounded, often blotched flowers in almost every shade. Neat and tidy, it is perfect for pots and edging — a mainstay of our container-friendly flowers — and the petals are edible too.

Growing Viola wittrockiana from seed

Sow in summer for autumn and winter colour, or in late winter under cover for spring displays; it germinates best in cool conditions. Prick out, grow on, and deadhead to prolong flowering. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
