Passion flower seeds — intricate blooms on climbing vines

The passion flower is one of the garden's true showstoppers — a complex, symbolic bloom whose crown of fine filaments earned it its name from early missionaries, who read the parts of the flower as emblems of the Passion. Botanically these are passiflora, with the hardy blue form gathered under Passiflora caerulea in our flower seed range. New to flowers? Our flower growing guide gets you started.

An exotic talking point for any sunny wall — the calendar shows when to sow.

A symbolic, exotic climber

Beyond the striking flowers, many passion flowers go on to carry ornamental egg-shaped fruits, and their tendril-climbing vigour makes them a favourite among our climbing flowers and our wider ornamental flowers. The genus name is passiflora — see Passiflora caerulea for the hardy blue species.

Growing passion flower from seed

Sow with patience: pre-soak the seed and keep it in a warm propagator, as it can be slow and erratic to germinate. Grow the young vines on in good light and train them onto a sturdy support in a warm, sheltered, sunny spot once all danger of frost has passed.

Why is it called the passion flower?
Early missionaries read the flower's parts — the filaments, stamens and styles — as emblems of the Passion, giving the plant its name. Is the passion flower the same as passiflora?
Yes. Passiflora is simply the botanical genus name for the passion flowers; the hardy blue form is Passiflora caerulea. Does the passion flower fruit?
Many types go on to carry ornamental egg-shaped fruits after flowering, adding a second season of interest. How do I grow it from seed?
Pre-soak the seed and keep it warm in a propagator — germination is slow and erratic — then grow on and train onto a sturdy, sunny support.
